Thank you to all who contributed to my Annual Toy Drive and the Annual East York Seniors Christmas Dinner!
This past Holiday Season marked my 9th Annual Toy Drive. Over the past 9 years, I have had the pleasure of bringing hundreds of toys to the various Shelters in the East York area. Thank you, Ward 29 residents, for your generosity. Your donations brought smiles to many children in our community, who may not otherwise have had Christmas gifts.
Many East York Seniors gathered again this year on Christmas day at the East York Community Centre for the 24th Annual East York Seniors Christmas Dinner. This dinner has become a tradition in our community that is well attended by many seniors and others who would otherwise spend Christmas day alone. This year, over 225 Senior Citizens came out on Christmas day to enjoy the festive meal, camaraderie and entertainment. I always enjoy the opportunity to meet the guests and announce the raffle prize winners.
This event is made possible through the efforts of volunteers who give their time to ensure that the guests enjoy a festive holiday meal. The list of the many organizations and individuals who donate to this event is lengthy, and the success and continuation of the dinner is a result of these contributions. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers and contributors and I look forward to working with you for the 25th Annual East York Seniors Christmas Dinner.
Don Valley Brick Works
On December 20, 2006 the Federal Government of Canada, through their Strategic Infrastructure Fund, pledged $20 million to the sustainable and natural redevelopment of this important heritage site, a project that is facilitated by Evergreen, a well-respected environmental organization. As the Councillor for Ward 29, I was pleased to attend this important event.
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area, announced an investment of up to $20 million to support the creation of an innovative urban green space called Evergreen at the Brick Works. Geoff Cape, Executive Director of Evergreen, also attended the announcement.
The project will contribute to Toronto being a leading tourist destination, will create concrete economic benefits for the area, and will make a positive contribution to the health and quality of life for Torontonians.
Evergreen at the Brick Works is a pioneering environmental community facility that will explore how nature makes cities more liveable. The site includes a 16-hectare park with the Weston Quarry Garden, wetlands, hiking trails, wildflower meadows, and 15 heritage buildings, and is at the centre of Toronto’s internationally unique ravines and green ways that total more than 27,000 acres. The extensive redevelopment and renovation project will use leading-edge green design technology adapted to the heritage buildings and their ongoing management.
Once completed, Evergreen at the Brick Works will offer a broad range of activities for visitors, including community and youth programs, arts and culture programming, outdoor winter activities such as skating, theatre and performance spaces, and a restaurant and café featuring food grown onsite at demonstration gardens.
The Government of Ontario has already provided $10 million to preserve the existing buildings and trail system at the site. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the City of Toronto, which own and manage the site respectively, granted Evergreen permission to redevelop it into an environmental education and community-focused centre.
