Councillor Case Ootes Calls For City to Amend Parking By-Laws for Motorized Scooters and Motorcycles

September 13, 2005

Toronto, Ontario/…In a Notice of Motion that will be considered by City Council at it’s September 28th meeting, Councillor Case Ootes (Ward 29, Toronto-Danforth) calls for the City to amend its by-laws to allow scooter and motorcycle operators to park their vehicles free of charge, in existing, designated on-street parking spaces, without having to purchase Pay & Display tickets. Additionally, Councillor Ootes would like to see the City allow motorized scooters to be parked on sidewalks, providing they do not obstruct pedestrian flow. Councillor Glenn DeBaeremaeker will second the Notice of Motion.

“Motorcycle and scooter operators are currently at a disadvantage, because they often have their Pay & Display tickets stolen from their open windscreens, when parked in on-street parking spaces,” said Councillor Ootes. “They are doing their part to help the environment, but often are penalized with a parking ticket, after their Pay & Display ticket is stolen. This is not fair, and we need to amend the by-laws.”

Councillor Ootes added, “Traffic gridlock and pollution are significant concerns for our City, and we should do what we can to encourage scooter and motorcycle operators to continue to use their environmentally-friendly vehicles.”

Motorized scooters use up to ninety percent less gasoline than regular car and truck vehicles, and also use far less road space, thus helping with our gridlock problem.

Councillor Ootes will also ask the Toronto Parking Authority to prepare a report that would detail how the Authority could designate a small area for scooter and motorcycle free parking at all of their indoor and outdoor “Green P” lots.
